How to Get International Merchant Processing for a Global Business
International processing can mean two different things: a merchant operating outside its provider's home market, or a merchant exploring an acquiring relationship in another market. Neither description, on its own, tells a provider which entity sells, where customers are located or how money reaches the business.
Use this guide to prepare a country-by-country operating and payment profile. The ISO section explains how to bring MBA a cross-border referral. This is a planning framework, not legal or tax advice or confirmation that any country, category or settlement method is available.

Map the entity, operation and customer markets separately
Start with the legal seller and its real operating locations. Then identify management, ownership, fulfillment, customer countries and settlement banking. A domain extension or a foreign-currency price does not establish the merchant's location for acquiring purposes.
| Dimension | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Seller | Which legal entity contracts with the customer? |
| Operation | Where are management, staff, inventory or service delivery located? |
| Customers | Where are buyers located, and which destinations are actually permitted? |
| Acquiring | Which entity and activity would the proposed account support? |
| Settlement | Which business account receives funds, in which currencies and countries? |
For multiple entities, prepare a separate picture for each. Do not use a nominal address, unrelated company or another merchant's account to make an unsupported business appear domestic.
Confirm provider eligibility before creating a new structure
A provider may support buyers in many countries while onboarding merchants from a much smaller set. Stripe's guidance on opening an account in another country illustrates entity, tax, location and banking conditions attached to that provider's process. It is not a universal incorporation checklist or a reason to create a company before confirming the intended route. Stripe: Requirements to open an account in another country
Adyen's platform onboarding documentation similarly makes verification information dependent on legal-entity type and operating country. Its supported platform countries do not establish MBA's coverage or another acquirer's requirements. Use the actual proposed program's current rules. Adyen: Platform user onboarding and verification
- Organize company registration, ownership and control information in a consistent format.
- Explain any difference between the legal seller, trading name, website and receiving bank account.
- Identify document language, certification or translation requirements before commissioning unnecessary work.
- Confirm whether the partner supports the category as well as the entity country.
- Keep sensitive identity and banking records for the requested secure verification process.
Review market access and sanctions without treating acquiring as permission
A supported merchant country does not prove that every product can be sold to every customer country. Review licensing, product, import, consumer and tax questions for the actual activity with qualified advisers. Healthcare, gaming, research products and cosmetics may need different destination analysis.
OFAC's compliance framework describes a risk-based sanctions compliance approach for organizations with relevant U.S. connections. International acquiring, a different currency or an intermediary does not remove applicable sanctions obligations. Establish who performs screening and how possible matches are resolved within the relevant legal framework. OFAC: A framework for compliance commitments
Disclose the full customer and destination mix. Do not route transactions through another country to conceal a prohibited market or misstate where the business operates. A credible payment review starts with the real geographic profile.
Separate checkout currency from settlement currency
Record the currency shown to the buyer, the currency processed and the currency ultimately received by the business. Ask where conversion occurs, how the exchange rate is determined, what fees apply and how refunds are handled when rates change. Multi-currency display does not necessarily mean local acquiring or like-for-like settlement.
- Compare payout frequency, cutoffs, banking holidays and transfer costs.
- Identify the receiving account's eligibility and name-matching requirements.
- Separate freely available funds from any reserve or other restricted balance.
- Test how refunds, disputes and adjustments affect currency reconciliation.
- Treat requests for BTC, USDT or other digital-asset settlement as a separate capability, custody and compliance discussion; do not assume availability.
Build the cash plan from the actual proposed contract. Foreign acquiring does not automatically mean lower cost or faster access to funds. Compare the complete economic and operational arrangement with the existing route.
Design checkout for the markets and methods actually supported
Explain prices, currencies, taxes or delivery charges, customer support and cancellation in a way the intended buyer can understand. Confirm which local methods and recurring-payment capabilities the gateway supports for the merchant's account, not just in its global marketing material.
The FCA's strong customer authentication guidance explains security requirements affecting relevant electronic payment flows in the UK, with exemptions and conditions. Discuss the applicable authentication flow with the provider instead of assuming every cross-border transaction needs the same treatment or can bypass authentication. FCA: Strong customer authentication
Ask the integration team to demonstrate challenge, decline, timeout and refund scenarios for supported methods. A successful domestic test does not establish that every intended customer market has been tested.
Submit a scoped request and validate the agreed arrangement
Prepare the entity and geographic map, product or service description, payment history, ticket sizes, platform requirements and desired currencies. Explain what is not working today: entity eligibility, customer coverage, category support, billing capabilities or settlement. These lead to different partner conversations.
Durango's public international-account material illustrates a specialist provider's emphasis on cross-border and multi-currency services. Such marketing should be treated as that provider's proposition, not proof that any merchant qualifies or that MBA offers identical coverage. Durango Merchant Services: International merchant account and gateway services
- Confirm the contracting entities, approved markets, methods, domains and responsibilities in writing.
- Review complete fees, conversion, reserves, funding and termination conditions.
- Test permitted transactions and reconciliation before expanding traffic.
- Reassess new markets, ownership, settlement accounts and product categories before implementation.
For ISOs: distinguish a global merchant from an international acquiring request
Your current relationships may not support a merchant's entity country, category or customer market. Identify that specific boundary. A merchant with international customers may still have a workable domestic route; another merchant may need a relationship that can genuinely onboard its overseas entity.
MBA works with global merchants and can explore international acquiring relationships for eligible complex businesses. The value is another informed route to investigate, not a claim that offshore processing solves every restriction or that a local company should be created for appearances.
Agree jurisdiction, communication and commercial responsibilities before a handoff. Consider time zones, language, support escalation and who coordinates verification. Buy rates, residuals, fees and any relationship terms need an actual agreement; do not infer them from a provider's public country list.
Give MBA the cross-border facts that determine the next step
- Your ISO contact details and permission to discuss an identified merchant.
- The seller's entity and operating countries, customer markets and actual activity.
- Current and requested acquiring or payment functionality, with the existing limitation explained.
- Approximate activity, ticket sizes, billing currencies and desired settlement currency.
- Known licensing, sanctions, ownership or banking questions that remain unresolved.
A country-by-country business summary is more useful than an unqualified request for an international account. MBA can explore whether an available relationship should assess the case before the merchant spends money restructuring or integrating.
Your next step
Discuss the actual international processing requirement
Tell us where the business operates, what it sells, where customers are located and how you want to receive funds. MerchantBridge can explore available relationships for that specific profile.
