What Does a Third-Party Payment Provider Really Cost on Shopify?

Calculate Shopify's applicable platform transaction fee separately from the provider's processing charges, then add the plan, gateway, apps and operating costs your store actually needs. First establish that the proposed provider can accept your business and support your checkout. A cheaper rate is not useful if the required payment flow is unavailable.

The figures below are a November 1, 2026 public-pricing snapshot for a U.S. store comparison. They are not universal international rates or a MerchantBridge quote. Your location, plan, contract and payment-method routing determine the applicable charges. Shopify states that third-party transaction fees are additional to the external provider's processing charges. Its calculation includes product cost after discounts, plus tax and shipping, multiplied by the applicable rate. Do not apply a percentage only to merchandise revenue if the actual fee base is larger. Shopify Help Center: Third-party transaction fees on your Shopify bills

Also distinguish the payment-processing bill from cash timing. A payout delay or restricted balance affects liquidity; it is not automatically a permanent processing expense. Put it in a separate cash forecast rather than hiding it inside the headline rate.

Use a dated, plan-specific pricing snapshot

For a U.S. store using Shopify's public USD month-to-month prices, the pricing page reviewed November 1, 2026 lists the following. Annual billing has different plan prices. These figures exclude promotions, taxes, negotiated terms and provider charges. Shopify: Shopify pricing: public USD plan comparison

Basic$392%
Grow$1051%
Advanced$3990.6%

Shopify Plus uses contract-based pricing. Its advertised starting monthly figure is not a month-to-month quote; obtain the applicable full proposal and confirm the commitment and transaction fees separately. Shopify: Shopify pricing: public USD plan comparison

Use the rate shown for your actual store and agreement. Do not combine an annually billed plan price with a month-to-month cost comparison, or present a Plus starting price as a complete enterprise quote. Capture a dated copy of the proposal when making the decision; this guide's snapshot should be rechecked before purchase.

Compare a complete fictional month

Assume a U.S. store has $50,000 of fee-bearing online card orders, including applicable shipping and tax, across 500 purchases. All are processed by the same eligible third-party provider. For illustration only, invent a provider charge of 3% plus $0.20 per purchase and a separate $50 monthly gateway fee. No refunds, international surcharges, minimums, other event fees, app charges or taxes on fees are included. Provider acceptance and integration are assumed solely to isolate the arithmetic.

Illustrative U.S. monthly total using the public plan snapshot and invented provider terms
ChargeBasicGrowAdvanced
Provider: 3% of $50,000 plus $0.20 x 500$1,600$1,600$1,600
Invented gateway fee$50$50$50
Shopify third-party transaction fee$1,000$500$300
Public monthly plan price$39$105$399
Total of listed costs$2,689$2,255$2,349

In this scenario Grow is $434 below Basic, but Advanced is $94 above Grow. The lowest platform transaction rate does not produce the lowest total at this volume. The example does not establish the cheapest plan for your store, because app needs, features and actual provider terms may differ.

Holding everything else constant, the $294 monthly plan-price increase from Grow to Advanced is offset by a 0.4-percentage-point reduction in the platform fee at $73,500 of applicable monthly volume: $294 divided by 0.004. This break-even point uses monthly billing and the same fee-bearing base throughout. It changes if pricing, billing commitment or the payment mix changes.

Build the comparison around the actual payment mix

Shopify's billing guidance excludes POS orders and specified manual payment methods from third-party transaction fees. PayPal transactions are exempt when Shopify Payments is selected as the primary provider. Stores created on or after May 12, 2025 can incur these fees on amounts paid with gift cards or store credit. These exceptions do not eliminate every other provider or service charge. Shopify Help Center: Third-party transaction fees on your Shopify bills

Refund treatment also depends on location: Shopify says the platform transaction fee is not returned where Shopify Payments is available, while stores in countries where it is unavailable receive a proportional credit. Confirm the treatment on the actual store's bill. Shopify Help Center: Third-party transaction fees on your Shopify bills

A mixed-provider setup needs its own model. Shopify's current documentation describes standard Shopify Payments rates plus a 1.25% premium on transactions routed through Shopify Payments alongside a direct third-party provider. The third-party-routed transactions retain the plan-based platform fee. Contracted Plus access is described as early access by request, and recurring subscription charges are excluded from the documented payment-recovery feature. Do not assume this arrangement is available to an otherwise ineligible business. Shopify Help Center: Using Shopify Payments with a third-party provider

Create separate rows for each route instead of multiplying all sales by one blended percentage. A manual-payment label should describe a genuine manual payment; it should not be used to disguise an integrated card transaction or bypass platform rules.

Confirm the whole checkout, including renewals and exceptions

Shopify distinguishes direct providers, which keep payment on the store, from external providers that use an off-site checkout. Availability depends on the store's configuration and location. Its current guidance also says U.S. stores whose sales tax is managed by Shopify must change that tax setting to Self-directed before using third-party providers. Treat that as a configuration and tax-workflow question to resolve with Shopify, not an instruction to change it without review. Shopify Help Center: Third-party payment providers

For subscriptions, check the exact app, gateway and payment method. Shopify lists a limited set of supported subscription gateways and notes regional and provider restrictions. A gateway supporting one-time purchases does not establish recurring support, and an existing subscription may require a separate migration plan. Shopify Help Center: Considerations and payment gateways for subscription products

  • Confirm the merchant category, country and legal entity can be reviewed by the proposed provider.
  • Identify the exact Shopify payment app or supported connection, including who maintains it.
  • Test a normal order, a declined payment, a refund and the customer return from any off-site checkout.
  • For recurring products, verify the initial purchase, renewal, cancellation and payment-update flow.
  • Check wallet, currency, tax, shipping and order-status behavior for the actual configuration.
  • Confirm how provider records and Shopify orders reconcile, including partial refunds and failures.

A provider logo in a directory is a starting point for questions. It does not confirm acceptance of every catalog, every feature offered directly by that provider, or a particular third-party app's behavior.

Ask for a proposal that can be reconciled to a bill

Give each candidate the same activity assumptions and ask which line items are included. Keep unknown charges visible. Ask about billable authorization attempts, refund and dispute fees, minimums, foreign-card costs, currency conversion and recurring software charges where relevant. Temporary concessions should have a separate after-promotion scenario.

Then confirm who supports a failed payment or a mismatch between the Shopify order and processor record. An attractive quote is incomplete if your team cannot resolve exceptions or explain the resulting customer charge. Keep the existing checkout functioning while the proposed route is evaluated and any authorized transition is prepared.

Questions & answers

Is Shopify's third-party transaction fee the processor's fee?

No. It is a separate platform charge where applicable. Include the provider's charges and any gateway, plan or app costs in the same comparison.

Does activating Shopify Payments remove all third-party fees?

No. Fees depend on which provider processes the transaction and the configuration. Check the current rules for PayPal, other payment methods and any mixed-provider arrangement rather than assuming a blanket waiver.

Is the Advanced plan always cheaper for an external provider?

No. Its lower transaction percentage must be compared with its higher plan price and your actual fee-bearing volume. The fictional example shows why the total can be higher at a particular volume.

Can any Shopify provider process subscriptions for my business?

No. Confirm merchant acceptance and the exact subscription app, gateway and payment-method combination. Existing recurring accounts introduce additional migration and customer-permission questions.
