How to Get Payment Processing for a Skincare or Cosmetics Brand
A finished skincare brand needs a payment review built around what consumers actually receive: the formulation, intended use, claims, supply chain and billing terms. A peptide serum is not automatically a research chemical, and a topical format does not automatically make a product only a cosmetic.
This U.S.-focused guide helps smaller brands, private-label operators and established cosmetic sellers prepare the business for processing. It includes a separate ISO section for agents whose current relationships do not cover the merchant's product or sales model.

Determine whether the offer is cosmetic, drug-related or something else
List each product's ingredients, format, intended use and claims across packaging, website and promotion. FDA explains that intended use determines whether a product is a cosmetic, a drug or both. Its examples include products combining cosmetic uses with drug claims. Cosmeceutical is not a separate category under the federal law. FDA: Is it a cosmetic, a drug, or both?
Do not treat every peptide-containing product as the same underwriting case. A finished cosmetic, a raw ingredient supplier, an injectable product and a research catalog require different analysis. If a product claims to treat a condition or affect body structure or function, obtain a qualified classification review rather than simply deleting the most obvious word.
- Create a complete SKU register with label and formula versions.
- Separate ordinary cosmetic products from any drug, device or other regulated offer.
- Identify whether you manufacture, import, private-label or resell each product.
- Disclose the actual catalog and every relevant selling domain to the proposed payment partner.
Establish the brand's MoCRA responsibilities
FDA's MoCRA overview describes responsibilities including safety substantiation and adverse-event reporting, along with facility registration and product listing provisions. Identify the responsible person and the actual manufacturer's role; outsourcing production does not make the brand's obligations disappear. FDA: Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act overview
Some small businesses are exempt from facility registration and product listing, but the exemption has conditions and product exceptions. FDA's registration guidance explains that certain product types are excluded from the small-business exemption. Confirm the actual applicability rather than assuming that low revenue or private-label status settles the question. FDA: Cosmetic facility registration and product listing
Keep any applicable registration, listing or exemption analysis in the business file. Do not advertise registration or listing as FDA approval of the product. If you sell internationally, assess destination requirements separately; U.S. readiness does not establish permission to sell everywhere.
Review consumer-facing claims and endorsements
Ask what a reasonable customer would understand from the entire offer, including imagery, before-and-after comparisons, testimonials and influencer promotions. Keep evidence for performance claims and identify the exact finished product to which the evidence relates. A supplier ingredient study does not automatically establish the same result for your formulation.
FTC's health-products guidance explains the need to substantiate health-related advertising and consider implied claims as well as literal wording. Where a beauty product makes health claims, review that guidance alongside the product's regulatory classification. FTC: Health products compliance guidance
- Maintain a dated record of the claim, evidence and reviewer.
- Check paid promotions and affiliate pages as well as your own store.
- Ensure support staff do not introduce treatment or medical claims absent from the reviewed offer.
- Correct misleading promotion substantively, not just for the duration of a processor review.
Show that the brand can deliver and respond to problems
Prepare manufacturer and fulfillment details, stock availability, lead times and lot traceability. Explain who handles a damaged package, a product complaint, a return and a possible safety issue. Those are related but distinct events and may need different owners.
| Business question | Useful preparation |
|---|---|
| Who supplies the product? | Manufacturer or distributor relationship and the current product specification. |
| Can advertised orders ship? | Stock, production lead time and realistic dispatch commitments. |
| Can a batch be traced? | Lot reference connected to receipt, inventory and customer orders. |
| What happens after a complaint? | Support escalation, return handling and responsible safety-review contact. |
| Who controls marketing? | Approval process for labels, site claims and authorized promotions. |
Keep refund and shipping terms consistent with the actual operation. An advertised launch date should reflect inventory readiness; a made-to-order or preorder model should be identified as such rather than presented as immediate shipment.
Prepare the checkout and the merchant application together
Show the seller, currency, product quantities, delivery charges and total before payment. If offering replenishment, make the subscription selection and renewal terms clear. Test cancellation, skipped shipments and refunds so the billing system and warehouse reach the same result.
Provide the business entity and ownership summary, banking arrangement, catalog, supply chain, sales history or launch forecast, platforms and countries served. Clearly distinguish one-time orders from recurring sales. Do not assume every cosmetic brand needs a high-risk account; the proposed provider evaluates the specific model.
For Shopify stores, check both the availability of the proposed provider and the platform's third-party transaction charges. Shopify explains that these can apply in addition to the payment provider's own fees, depending on the arrangement. Confirm current plan and regional terms rather than judging a proposal solely by its processing percentage. Shopify: Third-party payment providers
Confirm the proposal and maintain the reviewed offer
- Confirm category, entity, domains, payment methods and integration support before activating live payments.
- Review full pricing, funding timing, any reserve and contract conditions against the brand's cash needs.
- Test receipts, refunds, failed payments and subscription changes using supported test tools.
- Review a new active ingredient, therapeutic claim, supplier or major trial offer before introducing it.
- Keep the payment partner informed of material changes to the business it reviewed.
A skincare account should not become a channel for unrelated research or therapeutic products without the required separate review. The goal is a clear, durable operating profile, not an approval that depends on an incomplete catalog.
For ISOs: distinguish the brand's real processing issue
Ask whether the merchant needs support because of the product classification, claims, subscription offer, country or platform. A small finished-cosmetic brand may be unnecessarily grouped with research suppliers simply because its serum contains peptides. The reverse mistake is treating an actual therapeutic product as ordinary beauty retail.
MBA can explore relevant acquiring relationships based on the disclosed catalog and customer offer. That may help an ISO retain a conversation its existing program cannot pursue, but it is not a promise of lower-risk classification or acceptance of unsupported claims.
Agree referral roles and merchant permission before collecting documents. Any commercial or residual terms depend on the case. Do not promise that registration, a supplier certificate or a wording change alone will secure processing.
Send a cosmetic-brand referral with the right distinctions
- Your ISO's contact details and the merchant's permission status.
- Finished cosmetics, raw ingredients or another model, with any classification questions disclosed.
- The selling entity, countries, platform and supplier or private-label arrangement.
- Approximate volume, order values and one-time versus recurring activity.
- The limitation in the current program and the specific capability being sought.
Keep proprietary formulas, bank statements and customer complaints containing personal information out of the first inquiry. MBA can establish whether a relevant partner discussion is appropriate and what supporting evidence comes next.
